Game Designer & Narrative Designer
February 2017 – June 2017 (4 months)
Joia is an action/adventure game, Zelda-inspired, located in a retro-futuristic universe, on an exotic planet from an unknown stellar system, where the player embodies a young botanist looking for her brother. The player has at his disposal a “Seed Gun”, which fires 3 different seeds of plants he can use in his environment.
I was in charge of the dialogs and of the narration throughout our prototype. I also wrote the narrative bible of the project.
WHAT WENT WELL
It was the first time we worked in a team so big, we were very excited about what we could do. Moreover, our profiles were complementary.
WHAT WENT WRONG
There were several people in the team who could almost never agree on the different choices we made for the game, and not because we couldn’t explain what we thought, but because they were very stubborn. In our case, there was a drop in motivation, and it was very complicated here for the project manager to make the team overcome this situation.
Joia accumulated delays very soon in the development because of these issues, and it impacted our moral, and the well-being of the production, unfortunately.
WHAT I LEARNED
When you work in a team and submit ideas/thoughts, you can’t be offended if your ideas don’t please everyone. Working with other people is all about communication, sharing, listening and having empathy.
On a more personal level, it was the first time I worked on the dialogs of a game, and it was the discovery of an unknown passion for me.
